John L. Welch, born in Easton, Ionia County, Jan. 13, 1842 died at his son’s 
home, Lansing, Mich., Feb. 10, 1920, having rounded out his 70th year.  He was 
of a sturdy pioneer race.  His father, Simon Welch, born at Herkimer, N. Y., 
and his mother in Canada, and having settled here when Ionia was virtually a 
wilderness.  Deceased was the oldest of 11 children, two of whom remain, Mrs. 
E. F. Strong of Ionia and Rev. V. P. Welch of California.  On June 9, 1864 the 
deceased was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hawley, also of Ionia County, who 
with four sons are left to mourn her loss:  Frank E. of Easton, Byron H. of 
Lansing, Herbert S. of Houston, Texas and Ray L. of Ionia.  A kind and loving 
husband and father as well as a true friend of all, will cause his memory to 
linger in our minds as a “truly good man”.

The remains of John L. Welch, an old Ionia county resident, were brought from 
his home at Lansing early this morning, the Bradley hearse leaving here at 
3:00 o’clock for the trip.  Mr. Welch will be buried from the home of his son, 
Ray, 216 North Jefferson Street, at 2:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon and 
interment will be in Oak Hill.

The time of the funeral for the late John L. Welch has been changed from 2:00 
o’clock to 2:30 Thursday from the residence of his son Ray Welch, 216 N. 
Jefferson Street.
