County’s Oldest Pioneer Woman Goes To Her Reward Mrs. Nancy Welch, one of Ionia county’s oldest residents, died this morning at half-past ten o’clock, in Easton. Mrs. Welch lived until a year ago in her own home on High street and Kimball alley, this city, but old age and infirmity made it necessary for her to depend on others, and she changed from the house where she had lived for about thirty years. Before coming to town she lived on her farm in Easton for many years. She came to Michigan from New York in 1838, and was 96 years old on July the 14th. Mrs. Welch’s maiden name was Nancy Sprague. She married Simon Welch, who died 54 years ago. There are three children, Rev. Vine P. Welch of Harvey, North Dakota, John Welch of Portland, and Mrs. Emory F. Strong of Easton. Mrs. Welch was a woman of extraordinary vitality, being able to do her own housework until three or four years ago, in spite of the fact that she has been crippled for eighteen years by the breaking of a hip. She had several strokes of paralysis during the last few months, but her constitution supported her under remarkable circumstances. It is probable that the funeral will be held at 2:00 o’clock on Monday afternoon, though decision depends on word from the son in Dakota. It will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Finch, on the Drake farm in Easton.
