The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, February 3, 1961

Mrs. Alta Rae Welch, 85, of 216 North Jefferson street, widow of Ray L. Welch, 
died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Harold Gates of Berlin township, where she 
had lived the past two months.

Mrs. Welch was born October 18, 1875 in Livingston county, the daughter of 
Charles and Isabelle Stedman.  She came to Ionia at the age of 20 and started 
work at Humphreys music store.  June 14, 1896 she was married in Ionia to Ray 
L. Welch who died in May of 1930.  Mrs. Welch had been a resident of Ionia 65 
years and lived at her present home almost 50 years.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Isabelle M. Gardner of Jackson Heights, 
N.Y., four nieces and one nephew.  A sister, Mabelle Stedman preceded her in 
death.

Funeral service will be conducted at Boynton funeral home Saturday at 2:30 
p.m. with the Rev. Harold A. Jayne, pastor of First Methodist church, 
officiating and interment at Easton cemetery.
