Welch, (nee Rebecca Dye) died yesterday afternoon at her home, with Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Bigelow, corner of Washington and Jefferson streets, in this city. Mrs. Welch had a severe attack of hemorrhage of the brain last week Thursday evening, because of which she soon became unconscious, having only few brief conscious moments thence up to her death. The utmost of medical skill and kindest of care were of no avail, so after one week’s painless sickness, yesterday she departed this life like one falling asleep. She was the only daughter of Nelson and Arminda Dye, whom our old pioneers will remember; and of her father’s family, only Mr. Harvey Dye, a farmer in this county, now survives. He was in watchful attendance upon her during almost her entire sickness. She was married to John H. Welch nearly forty years ago, whom no one can forget for his business activity and integrity, and his hearty, genial ways. He died on November 24, 1892, since which event she has lived a very quiet retired life. She was the mother of but one child, Douglas Welch, who died when about 18 years of age. Mrs. Welch was born here in Ionia, March 6th, 1841, in the one-story frame dwelling which still stands on West Washington street, first house west of the Evangelical church, and has always resided here. By her more than ordinary quiet, amiable and pleasant ways, Mrs. Welch had won a large circle of friends who will sincerely mourn her death. She was a Christian woman, never so active in Christian work, but in her quiet, unobtrusive way, living in her faith for many years, and dying as she lived. Too much in praise of the real worth of this woman cannot be said. Only those closely intimate knew or realized her real worth. The funeral of Mrs. Welch will be held next Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Episcopal church, Rev. W. H. Thomas, D. D., rector, officiating. Friends may view the remains 12 to 2 o’clock on Sunday.
