Ionia Sentinel - Thursday, July 5, 1900

Vine E. Welch, formerly a resident of Ionia county, but who  has been a member 
of the Soldiers' home since its foundation, died at that place, in Grand 
Rapids, on Tuesday, June 26. The deceased was 60 years old and a cancer of the 
throat was the cause of his demise. He was converted to the Catholic faith 
before the civil war and the holy sacrament was administered two weeks before 
death. The funeral was held on Thursday, June 28, in the new soldiers' home 
chapel, interment in the home cemetery. The casket was covered with the stars 
and stripes and a wreath of cut flowers.
