Welch, which occurred as previously announced at his late residence, four miles north of this village on the 7th inst., this township has lost one of its most valued and enterprising citizens, and his bereaved family have the most profound sympathy of the entire community in their deep affliction. The deceased was born in Rutland County, Vermont, and while quite young his parents removed to western New York, settling in Steuben County near Rochester. On arriving at the age of maturity, Mr. Welch was imbued with the desire to come west, and leaving the scenes of his boyhood, he set out for this place, then little more than a howling wilderness, where friends of Mr. Webster’s people had preceded him. Shortly after arriving here he engaged in the milling business with Mr. James Newman, following this for several years; he was married at the age of 29 to Miss Sarah Hamlin, of this township, who proved a most faithful helpmate in the arduous tasks devolving upon all those by whose industry and perseverance this country has been developed. After disposing of his interest in the mill he purchased the tract of land which now constitutes one of the finest farms and homes in this vicinity, and which he leaves to his family supplied with all the conveniences and comforts that a kind husband and indulgent father could provide. He leaves a wife and five children, two sons and three daughters, all of whom are highly respected for their congenial dispositions towards each other and all with whom they come in contact. Mr. Welch never made any profession of religion or united himself with any church organization, but his life was so near spotless that it could, we believe, of a truth be said that he had not an enemy in the world. He set an example before the world which many within the pales of the church would do well to copy after. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Wednesday morning, and were attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends, and procession when it left the house being nearly a mile long.
