Daily Standard - Wednesday, Dec. 12, 1906

Gertrude Watt, wife of Hamilton R. Welker, passed away at 5 o'clock on Tuesday 
evening, aged 63 years. A funeral service will be conducted for deceased at the late

home, coroner of East Main and Jefferson streets, by Rev. G. W. Moore, at 2:30 
o'clock on Thursday afternoon, and the remains will be taken to Clarksville on 
Friday morning for interment. 

Friends wishing to view the remains may do so between the hours 9 and 1 on Thursday,

before the funeral service.

Mrs. Welker was one of the truly good and philanthropically noble women of the 
community.  Whatever she did, she did well and with a will born of always good 
intentions. She was zealous in the work of the W.C.T.U., the Church of Christ, and 
the Woman's Relief Corps, and her presence and counsel will be missed from those 
circles. She was a past president of the W.R.C., and had been honored by election to

the office of department chaplain of the same body. Besides the husband, two 
children survive; Mrs. Dr. John J. Green of this city, and Clark W., now a resident

of Detroit.

Gertrude Watt was a daughter of Thomas Watt and Nancy Pollock, both of Scotch-Irish

descent. She was born at Hubbard Trumbull county, Ohio, on April 16, 1843. She began

teaching school at the age of 14 years, and taught for 10 years. On May 18, 1867 she

was married to Hamilton R. Welch, at Findlay, Ohio, and they came to Michigan in 
November of the same year, settling in Odessa township, where they lived for 12 
years, up to 1885, when they came to Ionia, where they have since resided.
