Ward Wells, passed to his reward at his home at 303 S. Broas street on Friday evening December 18, of a heart ailment which developed from a recent illness of the flu. Mr. Wells was born January 10th, 1869, at Auburn, Ill, and spent his boyhood years on the farm. Being the son of a Baptist minister, this and other good influences gave him lofty idealism, which lasted all his life, making him a gentleman of culture and unquestionable character. He was graduated from Waverly high school and Dixon college, after which he spent ten years in school work. Coming to Michigan in 1902, he was engaged in insurance work for four years; employed as bookkeeper and office manager by the Ballou Basket Works from 1905-1909, and was city mail carrier from 1910-1934. In recent years he was the Belding correspondent for the Grand Rapids Herald, the Ionia County News and the Greenville Daily News. Mr. Wells was a member of the Belding lodge, No. 355, F. & A. M., the East Otisco Farmers club, the Goodfellowship club and the Congregational church of which he was a member of the board of trustees. The last four years Mr. and Mrs. Wells were chosen as sponsors of the youth group of the church, the Pilgrim Fellowship, to which he contributed much of religious interest to the young people. Two hobbies brought great joy t him, penmanship, in which he was a skilled exponent, and the study of the life of our great president, Abraham Lincoln. Surviving is the widow, Carrie, to whom he was married June 25, 1934, and several cousins one of whom lives in Michigan, Mrs. Isaac Flora of South have, who with Mr. Flora attended the funeral services. The funeral service was held at the Fitzjohn funeral home Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Henry L. Rust of the Congregational church. Interment was in River Ridge mausoleum under auspices of Belding lodge No. 355, F. & A. M. Bearers were Richard Rummler, Ralph Shepard, Leonard Fitzjohn, Bert Gregg, Al Wells and Floyd Warner.
