Wells died quite suddenly about 7 o’clock Monday a.m., nobody being present at the moment but Mrs. Wells. Mr. Wells had been in poor health for four or five years, and unable to do any sort of labor for past year. He was taken worse on Wednesday night of last week, when his son Loren was here over night, but he seemed better the next day and was not thought to be in immediate danger. The immediate trouble was acute indigestion, complicated with weak heart action. Dr. Hoag was called in the night, and was with him until 6:30 in morning, and when he left had no thought of the patient passing away so soon, his sudden death doubtless being due to the heart. Chauncey Emmett Wells was just passed 70 years old. He came to Ionia in the early 70’s and was a clerk in the drug store of Henry D. Irish, successor to F. C. Sibley and predecessor of Dr. W. R. Cutler. He soon became interested in pine land, and devoted his time for several years to land looking and speculation, but for several years has been entirely out of business. His residence most of the years since has been in Ionia. In the early years his social nature and genial spirit brought him in touch with many people, and he was widely known and generally popular. He leaves a wife and one son, Loren of Chicago, one son and two daughters having preceded him to the world beyond.
