Aug. 22, 2012 Genevieve "Gene" Louise Werdehoff, 86, of Ionia, formerly of Crystal, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012 at Heartland Health Care Center in Ionia. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at 12 p.m. at Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home in Carson City with Pastor Valerie Reynolds officiating. A luncheon will follow at Mt. Hope Church in Carson City. Interment was held in Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley. Genevieve was born July 5, 1926 in Frankfort, Mich., the daughter of William and Emma (Voss) Herman. She grew up in Frankfort, but in her teens the family moved to Detroit after the death of her father, and she graduated from Northern High School. On March 6, 1945 she married Albert Werdehoff, Jr. in Long Beach, Calif., and together they raised four children. They also owned and operated the Village Bakery in Chelsea, Mich., in the 1970's. Genevieve earned a Bachelor of Business and Administration degree with a Major in Management from Eastern Michigan University. She worked for the State of Michigan for over 24 years, before her retirement in 1986. Her employment with the State of Michigan included her position as Chief Accountant at the Plymouth State Home and Personnel Officer at the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital. She also held positions with the Department of Corrections including; Personnel Officer of both the Corrections Camp Program and the Michigan Reformatory. Genevieve was also a Licensed Insurance Agent and a Real Estate Investor. She was a member and past president of the Ionia County Historical Society and the Crystal Historical Society. She was a past Crystal Township Clerk and volunteered with Montcalm County Commission on Aging. She loved life and had many interests, including making stained glass and getting involved in the antique business, operating antique shops in Chelsea and Ionia. Genevieve is survived by her four children, Carol Aebli of Augusta, Patricia (Randall) Niece of Ionia, Susan (Charles Laraway of Grass Lake and Alan Werdehoff of Kalamazoo; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Robert) Witt of Frankfort. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert; and two sisters, Florence Houtz-Crews and Vera Cox. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice.
