Mrs. Gertrude Ann Werner, 94, of Ionia went to be with her Lord on March 21, 
2007. Gertrude was born December 5 , 1912 in Fowler Michigan the daughter of 
Phillip & Rosina Blundy. She married Julius Wohlscheid on July 10, 1937 and 
had 5 children that survive. Gary (Gail) Wohlscheid, Gail Wheeler, Dave 
(Shirley) Wohlscheid, Tom (Lucy) Wohlscheid, & Steve (Gayle) Wohlscheid. 
Julius preceded her in death on September 22, 1949.

She married Louis Werner (a widower with 6 children) on April 29, 1952. Louis 
preceded her in death on March 1, 1995. His children survive her. Kay (Sam) 
Conner, Jane Emelander, Jerry (Nancy) Werner, Alice (Dick) Foreback, Rose 
(Glenn) Smejkal, & Marlene (Gary) Chartrand. Gertrude & Louis had one daughter 
together, Mary (Kenn) Swick who also survives her.  Gertrude had 28 
grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, & 3 great, great grandchildren that 
survive her.

She was preceded in death by 1 daughter in-law Rosie Wohlscheid and 3 
granddaughters & 1 great granddaughter. Gertrude was also preceded in death by 
2 sisters & 5 brothers.

Until the age of 91 Gertrude lived in her own home and drove her beloved blue 
Mercury Marquis everywhere. Gertrude was a very talented organist and could 
play anything even though she never learned to read sheet music.

She also loved to work in her flower & vegetable gardens. When Louis was alive 
they were known far and wide for their euchre games & their Sunday 
afternoon “board meetings” that were attended by many neighbors , friends, and 
relatives. There was always & extra plate & plenty of food at their dinner 
table for friends & family that stopped by. Gertrude was a member of SS Peter 
& Paul Church & the Altar Rosary Society. For many years she volunteered at 
the Ionia County Commission on Aging, Christian Services , & the Knights of 
Columbus.

A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m., Monday at SS Peter & Paul in Ionia with 
Father Mel Fox celebrant.  The family will receive friends and relatives 2. 
and 6:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. A rosary service will 
be held at 7:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers you may make memorial contributions to 
SS Peter & Paul School.
