Mrs. Werton:--This venerable lady, Mrs. S. P. Rowley’s mother, aged 85 years 
and 11 months, was born at Sterentown, Vanrenseller Co., N.Y., 1797.  Thence 
she removed with her father’s family to Corinth, Saratoga Co., where she was 
married in 1820.  Her husband died in 1843, so that she has lived a widow 38 
years.  In 1854 she removed west to Ohio with her sons and daughters, several 
of whom survive her.  Most of her widowed life she has resided with her 
daughter Mrs. Rowley, occasionally visiting for a few months or a year other 
members of her family.  Living so many years a widow seemed to make her life 
somewhat gloomy, but relieved withal by letter writing, the copying of 
favorite poems and hymns and the writing of meditations on religion and 
kindred topics which might well be read with profit by anyone.  “The 
Pilgrim,” “Melancholy” and “The Gloom of Autumn” may serve as illustrations of 
her favorite selections.  

Very early in life she united with the Presbyterian Church and throughout her 
long life had the sure and unfailing support which religion alone can give.  
Her life was quiet and beautiful, characterized by a kind thoughtfulness of 
others.  No one who has ever conversed with her, has failed to be profited and 
drawn toward that manner of life so well illustrated her own.  Another grand 
life has closed upon earth.

Her funeral services were conducted by the pastor of the Congregational Church 
assisted by the Rev. I. N. Carmin at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rowley on 
Thursday the 10th inst.
