West, aged 83 years, died last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. R. Dunham, West Main street. Deceased was born in England, and was for many years a resident of Berlin. He was kindly old gentleman, and had a happy faculty of making friends of his acquaintances. Subsequent Publication: Monday, August 5, 1901 William H. West was born on August 15, 1817 in Crawley parish, Isle of Wight, England, and entered into rest August 1, 1901, at Ionia, at the advanced age of 84. In the year 1819 his parents emigrated, coming to Philadelphia, Penn., removing again in a few years, this time settling at Chatham, Upper Canada. He lived there until 1855 when he made another change, coming to Orange, Michigan. In 1840 he was married to Miss McNeil, seven children being the result of this union. Four of these outlived their father, and all were present at the funeral. The services were conducted by his pastor, who took for his text, Eccl. 12:5, “Man goeth to his long home.” They were attended not only by a large number of relatives, among whom was a brother from Canada, but a numerous gathering of friends and neighbors were present to testify to the warm place which he had in their hearts. Brother West enjoyed excellent health all his life until about a year since, and it was not until six weeks ago that the final breakup came. On the death of his beloved wife nearly eight years since, he came to Ionia and nearly the whole of the time made his home with his second daughter, Mrs. E. R. Dunham. Everything was done by his children to render his last years happy, and although his loss will be keenly felt, no one can wish to keep him from the rest which was his. Brother West joined the Methodist church in his youth and for 68 years was a consistent member; a good deal of the time he was a member of the official board in its several offices. His religion was of that bright, cheerful, manly type, that commended itself to all who knew him. The end of this good man was peace. The four daughters who survive him are Mrs. Sarah Bennett, Mrs. Eliza Dunham, Mrs. Mary Ann Reed, Mrs. Harriett Cryderman. Loving hands laid him to rest in Balcom cemetery, where he awaits a joyful resurrection.
