Ionia County News, 8 Mar 1927

Ralph Lee Westbrook was born in Vergennes township, Kent county, Mich., Jan. 
27, 1887.  In March, 1892, together with his parents, he moved to their home in 
Campbell township, Ionia county, where he lived until he attended business 
college in Grand Rapids, when he was 18.  He made his home in Grand Rapids for 
about five years.  After his marriage to Nellie M. Sullivan of Grand Rapids, 
June 21, 1910, he moved to the farm in Sebewa township, Ionia county, where he 
lived until April 1, 1914, when he moved to the farm in Ionia township, which 
has since been their home.

In July, 1923, he suffered an attack of acute diabetes.  By adhering strictly 
to his diet list, he enjoyed fairly good health until February, 1926, when he 
suffered an attack of acidosis poisoning.  After his recovery, he spent 43 days 
in Ann Arbor at the University hospital, under the care of the diabetes 
clinic.  On his return he was able to resume his farm duties, which he carried 
on until his recent illness which terminated in his death, March 2, 1927, at 
his home in Ionia township.

In spite of his failing health, he had erected a new home during the year 1925, 
following the disastrous file which destroyed the Westbrook buildings March 24, 
1925.

He is survived by his widow and nine children, Gertrude, Pauline, Frances, 
Elizabeth, Richard, Ruth, Chrysta, Nellie Jane, and John Lee; also his parents, 
Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Westbrook, three brothers, Mark of Ionia township, Don and 
Ross of California, and three sisters, Mrs. Mattie Rogers of Lansing, Mrs. 
Hazel Garrison of Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Almeda Durkee of Grand Rapids.
