All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net August 13, 2010, 7:23 pm The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, April 14, 1952 Mrs. Mary Minnie Westbrook, 96, of Muir, a resident of Ionia county since before the Civil War, died Monday at 9:00 a.m. at the Ionia Convalescent Home, where she had been a patient for five weeks. She had been in failing health for the past four years, but seriously ill only the past five weeks. She was born May 12, 1855, in Augusta, daughter of Richard and Martha Adams. She moved with her parents when a child to Keene township. Her father fought during the Civil War with the Union army. She attended Ionia rural schools and Hastings high school. For nine years she taught school in Ionia and Kent Counties, and also for a few years in Manistee. Among the schools she taught were Marble school, Pinckney school, now known as Sayles school in Keene township, and Alton and Waters schools in Kent county. On May 7, 1882 she married Prindle Westbrook. They lived most of their married life in Campbell and Ionia townships before moving to Muir in 1914 on the present farm home of a son, Mark Westbrook. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1932 with friends and relatives, and in 1941, only a few months before her husband’s death, celebrated their 59th anniversary with relatives at the family home. He died September 9, 1941. Mrs. Westbrook is a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are three sons, Mark Westbrook of Muir and Donald and Ross Westbrook of Sacramento, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Mattie Rogers of Okemos, Mrs. Hazel Garrison of East Lansing and Mrs. Almeda Durkee of Grand Rapids; 30 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Grant of Lowell and Earl of Grand Rapids. A son, Ralph, preceded her in death in 1927. Mrs. Westbrook had seven grandsons who served in World War II. The body was removed to Shaw-Rivett funeral home in Muir, where arrangements are pending word from the sons in California.
