July 21, 1920 LOVED RESIDENT IS AT REST IN RIVER RIDGE CEMETERY MRS. EMELINE R. WETER, NEAR CENTENARIAN, HAD LIVED HERE MANY YEARS In the morning of the day of July 14, 1920 at the golden sunset of life – Grandma Water reached the end of this life’s journey. Though she was ready and anxious to go to her loved ones, who so many years preceded her and even strong in her faith of the future life – a great comfort to her – she was patient and did enjoy the home life and surrounding friends whom it seemed were almost numberless. Since June 19, 1920, when she reached her 94th years of age, she failed rapidly but only one week was she confined to her room – a test for those who live the true noble life. To know her was to love her and what is our loss is her gain and the sweet memory of her living will be a lasting example for both young and old. As she lived here, does she continue her blessing of love “over there”. Mrs. Emeline R. Weter was born in Pittstown, N. Y., June 19, 1826 – the oldest and last of six children. In the spring of 1945, she together with her husband, Michael R. Weter and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Gibbs, travelled to Michigan by ox team. Four other families having made the journey with them. Mr. and Mrs. Weter settled on the farm 3 ˝ miles west of Belding, later in the year 1882 they moved to Belding, having bought the property where the city hall now stands. Mr. Weter passed to higher life on June 1, 1891. In the fall of ’93, Mrs. Weter bought the home where she lived when eternal rest closed her eyes. She died as she lived, among flowers – her creed – “Instead of a gem, or even a flower, cast the gift of a lovely thought into the heart, of a friend.” Last sad rites were paid to her at her home 221 Hanover street, Friday p.m., July 16th. Rev. Mrs. Coffman Flowers, of Grand Rapids, officiating. The remains were laid at rest in River Ridge cemetery among a wealth of flowers, tokens of love and esteem. Those who survive are; one son, A. E. Weter, Belding; one son-in-law, C. M. Wise; 3 grand children, Edna Wise, Guy Wise, of Belding, Mrs. A. L. Pond, of Milwaukee, Wis.; and one great grand child, Elwood Weter, of Chicago. “She has gone home, to that glad land which lies, not far away, yet veiled from mortal sight, Lest the clear shining of its cloudless skies, Dim all the radiance of our earthly light.” “Not far away in the sweet hour of prayer, but living, loving, joining in our praise, Our faith can see thee, grown more heavenly fair, With the old smile, and dear familiar ways.” Additional Comments: River Ridge Cemetery –Lot 67 Sec. 1 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/w/weter24909nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
