Wetterling Is Found Dead By Son Monday Well-Known and Beloved Ionian, 77 Years of Age, Had Lived in the City for a Half Century. Ionians were saddened at noon Monday to learn of the sudden death of Magnus Wetterling, age 77, which occurred Monday morning, at his home on Hall street. Carl Wetterling, a son, who is employed as night fireman at the Delbert Vincent greenhouse, came home about 7 o’clock. His father had been in the habit of getting up early and unlocking the back door so his son could get in when coming from his work and then would go back to bed. As Mr. Wetterling had not been in the best of health for some time his son thought nothing of the fact that his father did not get up for breakfast. About 11 o’clock he called to his father several times and received no answer. Going upstairs, he found his father dead. Mr. Wetterling was born in Sweden and came to the United States when 21 years of age. For a number of years he worked in the lumber camps near Ludington and it was here that he met Miss Mary Mills, of Ionia, who later became Mrs. Wetterling. Miss Mills was teaching in Ludington. Mr. Wetterling went from Ludington to Texas, where he was married. After about two years they returned to Ionia and Mr. Wetterling lived here ever since. Mrs. Wetterling died in 1899. Mr. Wetterling was a member and faithful attendant of the First Presbyterian church. He was a deacon for a number of years and on June 15, 1919, was ordained an elder. For many years Mr. Wetterling had a garden at the corner of Lincoln avenue and Dexter street. Here, week in and week out, as long as his health permitted, Mr. Wetterling worked among his great beds of celery, better known as Wetterling’s “Sweet Heart” celery, and among his beautiful pansy beds. Here Ionia children always found a welcome and were told to pick a bouquet of the beautiful blossoms. Mr. Wetterling is survived by three children, Miss Mabel Wetterling, who teaches school at Iron River, Miss Christine Wetterling, who is a nurse at Grand Rapids, and [unreadable] Wetterling, of Ionia. He leaves a sister in Texas and a brother in Illinois. Funeral arrangements will not be made until word is received from Miss Mabel Wetterling at Iron River. The funeral for M. Wetterling will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Presbyterian church.
