He spent his boyhood days on his father’s farm two miles south of Carson City. At the age of 15 with the thought of helping his widowed mother he dropped school and went north where there was need of men at inviting wages. To his and her misfortune he returned home in three weeks on account of a broken leg. Upon recovering from his injury he returned to school again so that he later became a very efficient teacher and taught many years in Montcalm and adjoining counties. The inside work proving detrimental to his health he went to Upper Michigan and became bookkeeper for the C.L. Co., remaining 12 years, and then returned to this vicinity. He had a strong mind, was fond of books and loved nature. Kind and courteous in manner he was especially fond of children, and they in turn showed that they realized they had lost a good friend in the death of Patsy. He leaves to mourn their loss one brother, James Whalen, of Vicksburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Davern of Pewamo and Mrs. Mary Moore, of Carson City. The funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Pewamo and his remains were interred in the Pewamo cemetery. There were many beautiful flowers, among them being some from the employees of the G. T. Ry.
