Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard – Tues. July 17, 1984

CORNWALL, New York- Colonel James Rl Wheaton, 83, died in Cornwall, New York on 
July 15.

A West Point graduate in 1926 with a distinguished career, Col. Wheaton served 
in the Phillipines and Alaska in his early career as well as in Germany during 
World War II and later in Vietnam.

He had been living in New York State for several years since his retirement.

Col. Wheaton was born in Ionia on July 19, 1900, the son of Victor B. and 
Nellie Wheaton. He graduated from Ionia High school in 1918.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, James R. Wheaton, Jr. and Robert 
W. Wheaton, both graduates of West Point; and several grandchildren.

Also surviving are one brother, Clare A. Wheaton of Harbor Springs, Michigan 
and two sisters, Marjorie A. Wheaton of Ionia and Helen Hartley of Belding.

Two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at West Point and burial will be in the West Point 
Cemetery.
