Mr. Wheaton had been growing weaker at the hospital and members of the family had been informed of his condition during past week. None of them, however, could arrive in Ionia before Mr. Wheaton died. While his condition could not improve, his death Thursday morning was not then expected. He was born August 27, 1874 in Chester township, Eaton county, the son of Robert C. and Carrie Wheaton. April 20, 1899 he was married to Miss Nellie E. Davison of Midland and the couple moved to Ionia at that time where Mr. Wheaton was employed by the Pere Marquette railroad which had its center in Ionia. Mrs. Wheaton died March 4, 1952, as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Mr. Wheaton was employed as a locomotive engineer of the Pere Marquette railroad and he was the engineer of the work train which laid the rails for the road from Lowell north. While on regular railroad runs Mr. Wheaton piloted trains from Ionia to Grand Rapids and north to Big Rapids. He left the railroad in 1910 and became associated with Herman Hacker in the ownership and operation of a grocery store at the corner of Lincoln avenue and Jackson street now known as the Wilson Grocery. A short time later he came employed at the Ionia city post office under civil service and remained in government service for 30 years until his retirement in 1939 at the age of 65. During most of his work at the post office he was dispatch clerk. Upon his retirement Mr. Wheaton’s hobbies gave him opportunity to continue his more than average active life. He took great pride in his work at his home and in his garden and on his lawn, work which kept him busy during the day. When Mr. and Mrs. Wheaton first came to Ionia they rented the home which they later bought and in which Mr. Wheaton lived for more than 50 years at 529 North Jefferson street. Since Mrs. Wheaton’s death his daughter, Marjorie, and Mr. Wheaton have been living in the Wheaton home. Surviving are four sons, Cpl. James R. Wheaton of South Charleston, West Virginia; R. Stanley Wheaton of Dallas, Texas; Clare A. Wheaton of Greenville and Kenneth of Ionia; two daughters, Marjorie Wheaton at home and Mrs. Donald Hartley of Belding. He is also survived by two brothers, Merton of Muskegon and Lynn of Colton, California; three sisters, Mrs. A. N. Bottomly, Mrs. Virginia Bricker, and Mrs. John Simpson, all of Charlotte; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Date of funeral services is being delayed until all children have been notified.
