Herman Wheaton, 19, of Lyons, was instantly killed in an accident on M-21 west 
of Pewamo at 12:30 a.m. Monday.  He was driving a car which apparently ran off 
the edge of pavement, according to Undersheriff Leo Fuller, and went out of 
control, shooting back across and overturning.  Wheaton was thrown to the 
pavement.

Four others in the car were injured: Berdina Lance, 16, of St. Johns, possible 
shoulder and wrist fractures; Margaret Ernst, 17, of St. Johns Route 2, cuts 
and bruises; Roy Harper, 31, of Lyons, owner of the car, bruises, and Ray 
Croel, Jr., 17, of Lyons, leg and arm injuries.

The car was enroute to St. Johns from Lyons, taking the girls home, Fuller 
said.  The girls were taken to Ionia County Memorial Hospital, but have since 
been released and returned to their homes.

Wheaton is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wheaton of Lyons, a 
brother, Guy, Jr., and his grandparents.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday in the Shaw-Rivett Funeral Home in Muir, with burial in Oakwood 
Cemetery at Muir.
