Ionia Standard, 13 Nov 1896

Daniel Garrick yesterday received a telegram announcing the death of his
son-in-law, James Whalen, at Lansing, last evening, the result of a cold
contracted about a month ago.  A letter received here yesterday conveyed the
impression that the sick man’s condition was improving, but a turn for the worse
carried him off later in the day.  Mr. Garrick went to Lansing yesterday
afternoon.  Mr. Whelen was in the employ of the Hammell Cigar Co., and was well
known in Ionia as their foreman when the company operated here.  Interment will
most likely be at Brighton, the home of his parents.
