John S. Whipple, one of Ionia’s oldest residents, died Saturday a.m. at 1
o’clock at his home north of the Reformatory, where he was so long employed as
steward.  He was 84 years old, and had been out for several years on account of
ill health.  He has been gradually sinking for some weeks past.  He leaves a
wife, formerly Mrs. Phillips, and children and grand-children whose homes are in
California.  He was a man of excellent character, a conscientious official, and
well liked by all who knew him.  The funeral service will be conducted by Rev.
Branch at the home Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Burial will be at Highland Park.

The funeral for John S. Whipple took place Monday p.m., at the home near State
Reformatory.  The services were by Rev. E.E. Branch, and the singing by Mrs.
Thane Benedict and Mrs. G.M. Phelps.  The bearers were H.T. Rowley, John Inman,
L.P. Essick, Oscar Whorley, Wm. Marquette and Harry Ransford.  Interment was in
Highland Park.  Mr. Whipple was a good worker, a kindly, genial friend and
neighbor, upright in character – a man highly esteemed by all who knew him.  He
had lived to the good age of 84.  He leaves a widow but no children of his own.
 Mrs. Whipple, formerly Mrs. Phillips, has two daughters, Mrs. J.O. Post of this
city and Mrs. Eula Lee of Detroit.  Mr. Whipple entered the service of the State
as guard at Ionia State Reformatory Sept. 7, 1877, and retired in 1899, to take
personal charge of his farm, near the institution.  He served most of the time
as steward, and as such he is remembered by those familiar with the institution
during those years.
