Whitacre, who died here November 25, 1889. Rev. W. W. Slee, of the M. E. church, officiated at the funeral service, which was held at the home of Mrs. Emily Case, a sister of deceased, at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. The last rites were largely attended by old friends and neighbors. Those who accompanied the remains to Portland were Wm. R. Whitacre, of Big Rapids, and Arthur Whitacre, of Elk Rapids, the two sons of deceased, Mrs. James F. Read, a sister, and Robert Read, wife and daughter, of Grand Rapids. Harriet Root was born in Manchester, Mich., on Christmas day, 1840, being in her 74th year at the time of her death. In 1854 she moved to Portland with her parents, and attended the Portland schools. Her father was the late Dr. Root, who is kindly remembered by many of the older residents. On July 2, 1863 she was married to Erasmus D. Whitacre. Three children were born to this union, a daughter dying in infancy. After the death of Mr. Whitacre the family moved to Elk Rapids, where the mother and younger son, Arthur, have since resided, Wm. R. Whitacre having moved to Big Rapids six years ago. Besides the two sons, Mrs. Whitacre is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Read, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Emily Case, of Portland. Throughout her life Mrs. Whitacre was much devoted to her home and family, and ever had at heart the welfare of her two sons, who came to Portland Tuesday to lay the remains of a loving mother beside the body of a father gone before.
