One more of the “Boys in Blue” has folded his earthly tent.  John James 
Whitbeck was born in Arcadia, Wayne county, New York, April 21, 1941 and died 
at his home in Matherton May 22, 1932, after suffering four years as an 
invalid, his age being 91 years, 1 month, and 1 day.

He enlisted in the Union Army on August 23, 1862 and served as a corporal in 
Company “A” 160th New York Infantry for three years and three months until the 
close of the Civil War.  In his own words, he came through the war “without a 
scratch.”

He was united in marriage to Emma Arbuckle of Battle Creek on October 18, 
1868.  This union was broken by her death eleven years later, in 1879.  To them 
were born five children, three of whom have preceded him in death.  

Mr. Whitbeck was a farmer and lived for several years in North Dakota and also 
for a considerable time near Battle Creek, Michigan.  In 1909 he went to 
Florida where he spent eleven years and on November 8, 1916, he was united in 
marriage to Nora Williams.  Since 1920 they have lived in Matherton.  For a 
large part of his life he was a member of the church and during the last three 
years was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church at Matherton.  

He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Dora Metz of Chicago and Mrs. 
Elsie Sutton of Pontiac, Michigan, also three stepchildren, ten grandchildren 
and seventeen great grandchildren, beside other relatives and many friends.

The funeral service was held at the Matherton Methodist church Wednesday 
morning and the body was taken to Battle Creek for burial.  The pastor, Floyd 
N. Drake, officiated.
