Rev. Joseph H. Green officiated at the simple service and later the little party wended their way to Highland Park, where the interment took place. Whiting was the oldest inmate at the hospital, probably not only in age but in the number of years he has been a patient. The hospital was opened for use in September, 1885. In December of that year Whiting came as one of the first patients and remained through all the years until his death a few days ago. Dr. Haskell speaks of him as having been trustworthy, that he was a hard working patient and to have sent his remains to a dissecting room would have been a travesty. When Whiting was received here he possessed $2,200, which long ago was absorbed by the state. When he died Dr. Haskell appealed to Ormal B. Fuller and the latter saw that Whiting was decently buried at state expense.
