Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Bandfield funeral home, in charge of Rev. John H. Stewart. Burial was made in Portland cemetery. Mr. Whitman was born in Danby township April 3, 1867, where he spent the earlier years of his life. When 22 years of age he was united in marriage to Miss Lavina Trail, the couple taking up their residence in Portland shortly afterwards. After coming to this village Mr. Whitman was employed for a time in the Ramsey-Alton factory and it was while working there that he met with an accident that caused the loss of his thumb and crippled his right hand. He later conducted a bakery here, continuing that vocation for a number of years. In 1919 he moved to Lansing, returning to Portland in 1930. He was the son of Newell and Katherine Whitman, pioneer residents of Danby township. Besides the widow Mr. Whitman is survived by one son, Dr. Fay Whitman, of Lansing, and one brother, Frank Whitman, of Portland. The late Mrs. Orin Jones was a sister.
