He was born March 6, 1922 in Webster, South Dakota, the son of Raymond and Agnes Boyle Whitman. He graduated from Lily, South Dakota High School in 1939, and entered the United States army in 1942. He served with General Patton's armored division in Europe and was discharged n December 1945. He married Ruth Banhagel March 21, 1943 in Ionia, and they lived in Ionia all their married lives. He started work at the Michigan Reformatory in June 1946, and retired in 1981 after 34 year of service. At the time of his retirement, he was the Chief Engineer for the reformatory. Since his retirement, he and his wife have spent their winters in Florida. He was a member of the SS Peter & Paul of Columbus, the State employees Association and the Saranac American Legion Post. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Jame of Royal Oak and John of Ionia; one daughter, Jean Thom of Springfield; one brother, William, of San Diego; and two sisters Catherine Spielmacher of Grand Rapids and Margaret Mohs of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 11 am. from SS. Peter & Paul, with the Rev. Fred Brucker officiating. Burial will be in Mt.Olivet Cemetery.
