HIRAM): SENTINEL-STANDARD, Ionia, MI, 1-26-1939: "Mrs. Emiline Whitmore, 94, one of Portland's oldest residents, died Tuesday night at the home of her son, George Whitmore, of Portland. She was a sister of the late Elias Whitmore of Berlin, and the late Nelson Whitmore of Lyons. She was born February 16, 1844 in New York and would have had celebrated her 95th birthday next month. She married Hiram Whitmore in 1859 in Ohio. Following their marriage, they spent most of their time in the vicinity of Portland, at one time living in Ionia. Mr. Whitmore, a civil war veteran and a farmer, died in 1896. Surviving are seven sons, Willis H. Whitmore of Ionia, Hiram Whitmore and George Whitmore of Portland, Charles Whitmore of White Cloud, Fred Whitmore of South Haven, Samuel Whitmore and Bert Whitmore of California and twelve grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at George Whitmore's home with burial in Portland cemetery." PORTLAND OBSERVER, MI; 1-26-1939: "Mrs. Emmeline Jane Whitmore, 94 and recognized as Portland's oldest resident, succumbed about 10 o'clock Tuesday night at the home of her son, George Whitmore, on Kerney street. Death followed a stroke which the aged lady suffered late Tuesday after a two week's illness. Funeral services will be held at the new Bandfield funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday with burial in Portland cemetery. Rev. John H. Stewart will conduct the last rites. The deceased had lived in Portland about a year, coming here from the home of a son at Allegan. Her husband, who died approximately 40 years ago, was a Civil war veteran. Mrs. Whitmore, who would have been 95 years old February 16 was born in Ohio. She had spent all of her life in the middle west, having lived in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Seven sons survive, namely Willis Whitmore of Ionia, Hiram and George Whitmore of Portland, Fred Whitmore of South Haven, Bert and Sam Whitmore of California and Charles Whitmore of Fremont. There are also 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Living with Mrs. Whitmore at the Kerney street home were three generations: The son, Geo.; the granddaughter, Mrs. Ora Whitney; and the great-grandson, Arnold Whitney. Six grandsons will act as pallbearers. They are Paul Cook of Grand Ledge, Harold Dennie, Louis Hoenicke and Allie Rader of Portland, Albert Whitmore of Fremont, and Elmer Whitmore of Lansing."
