Whitney Passed Across the Dark River this Morning. George F. Whitney, for over fifteen years a prominent business man of this city, died this morning at 8:40, after a painful illness lasting four years. Mr. Whitney was born in Bennington, Vt., June 1, 1836, and was therefore 68 years old on June 1, last. He was the youngest of ten children. His family moved to Pittsfield, Ohio, when he was about one year old. He was married to Mary J. VanValkinburg, at Oberlin, O., April 29, 1858. Four children were born to them, three of whom are living: Mrs. Ida Gardner of Fredericktown, Ohio, and Mrs. A. F. Clark and Fred J. Whitney of this city. Mr. Whitney enlisted in the 41st Ohio infantry, and was severely wounded at Shiloh, disabling him for further service. He came to Michigan in 1868, living for a time at Hillsdale, and then at Big Rapids. He came to Ionia in 1885, and opened a store in Union block, continuing in trade here until about the time he was taken down. Mr. Whitney was of a jovial disposition, honorable in his business methods, and was highly esteemed by citizens generally. He was a member of the M.E. church since September 3, 1871. He was a member of Borden post, and of the Masonic order. He has been rarely conscious for several weeks, since his last stroke, but on Friday he woke to full consciousness, and talked tenderly to the members of the family, bidding them all good-bye. He relapsed into a comatose condition, and was never again free from mental cloudiness. He suffered greatly, especially on the last night. Funeral services at family residence on Friday, at 3 p.m. Interment in Highland Park.
