The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Monday, September 9, 1940

Mrs. Adelaide L. Whitney died at midnight Sunday at her home on Rich street.  
She fell and fractured her hip June 25 but recovered from that.

Born March 13, 1862, at Saline, Michigan, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram 
Stevenson, she moved with her parents to St. Johns when she was a young girl.  
She married Clinton E. Merrett and they moved to Denver, Colo., shortly after 
their marriage because of his ill health.  He died in Colorado and she moved 
to Ionia and Greenville.  She married Fred J. Whitney, June 24, 1891, and has 
since made her home in Ionia.  She was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal 
church in Ionia and a member of the Woman’s Literary club.

Surviving are the husband, Fred, and one brother, Frank C. Stevenson, of 
Greenville. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. from the 
residence, 304 Rich street.  Rev. Henry A. Hanson will officiate.

Funeral services for Mrs. Adelaide L. Whitney were held Wednesday afternoon at 
2:30 o’clock from the residence at 304 Rich street.  Rev. Henry A. Hanson of 
the St. John’s Episcopal church officiated and interment was held at Highland 
Park cemetery.  Bearers were Harvey E. Kidder, Foss O. Eldred, Herbert C. Hall 
and Erwin R. Schwyn.

Those attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Stevenson, Mr. and 
Mrs. Elroy Stevenson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Hatch, 
all of Greenville; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stevenson of Lansing and Mrs. George 
Schaffner of Battle Creek.
