March 18, 1919 AN OLD SHOEMAKER Late Samuel E. Whitney Did Big Business Years Ago. LOCATED HERE JUST AS READY-MADE FOOTWEAR BECAME POPULAR Conducted a Cobbling Shop for Years; Death Occurred Sunday Evening Samuel E. Whitney died at his home in Portland early Sunday evening at the ripe old age of 91. He had been a citizen of this village since 1869, moving here from Ohio. His birthplace was Montville Center, that state, and date of his birth was Oct. 2, 1828. During the war Mr. Whitney did a big business in his native state, making boots and shoes. He was a shoemaker of more than ordinary skill and followed this trade after coming to Portland, where he entered the employ of the late F. M. Cutcheon, who gave employment to a number of shoemakers. When ready-made footwear began to replace the custom-made article, Mr. Whitney switched into the cobbling business, and continued to run a shop here until old age compelled him to retire. His first wife was Amanda Allen and she died 43 years ago. There are two surviving children, Charles A. Whitney, Chicago and Mrs. John G. Anderson, Sedro-Woolley, Wash. In 1931 Mr. Whitney married Mary Udell, of Rochester, N.Y., who survives him, and whose constant care and attention no doubt prolonged his days. Mr. Whitney was a sprightly old gentleman and until a year or so ago a stranger would hardly have guessed his age. Charles Whitney, the son, is in a hospital in Chicago, but his wife came several days ago. Will Whitney, a grandson, will come from Chicago to attend the funeral, which will be held at the house Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev. T. F. Gait, of the Congregational church, officiating. Miles Whitney, of Portland, and Rolla Whitney, of Portland, Oregon, are half brothers. Two sisters, Mrs. Emeline Bailey and Mrs. Lorenz Batchelor, reside at Chardon, O.
