Whitney, 79, of Greenville went to live with the Lord July 18, 2007 at Spectrum Health United Memorial United Campus after a brief illness. He was born June 10, 1928 the son of Homer and Dora Meyers Whitney in Belding. He married Mary Lou Jeffery on August 15, 1947. She preceded him on October 19, 1964. He graduated from Belding High School where he played right tackle for Coach Rudness. Don loved the out-of-doors; hunting and fishing with family and friends in Michigan as well as Alaska, Canada and Wyoming; as a young man, he enjoyed camping and canoe racing. He was a member of numerous bowling leagues and was high scorer of the UAW Championship team at the International Bowling Tournament in 1960. Don was employed for many years at Extruded Metals, Detroit Gasket and with Belding Community Schools as a bus driver. He spent half of his career, over 20 years, as a corrections officer working with youthful offenders in Ionia, Michigan where he had a positive impact on the lives of many young men and was honored as an Officer of the Year. During his retirement he enjoyed creating items in his woodshop and visiting family and friends in Alaska, Florida and Michigan. Donald is survived by his children, Gerald and Bonnie Whitney of Palmer , Alaska, Sandra and Wayne Roberts of Sandusky, MI. his grandchildren, Bruce and Pamela Roberts, great grandsons, Noah and Heston of Marquette, LeAnn and Garon Gerard, step-granddaughters, Megan and Melinda of Freeland, Scott and Charlotte Kimber, great grandchildren, Hannah, Sydnee and Wilson of Sitka. Alaska; Anneka and Jade Baker; great grandchildren Kayla, Kylie, Mason and Dawson of Chugiak, Alaska. Don was married to Janet Whitney in 1965 and she survives along with her children, Angela and Greg Terry, Roger and Soo Young Swan, Charles Swan, Mary Jo and Brian Lavictor; her grandchildren, Monica, Paul and Michelle Terry, Holly Swan, Matthew and Kylee Johnson, Christian Shindorf, her great grandchildren Ashlee and Logan. His sister, Rosetta and Marlin Jeffrey of Belding, sister in law, Margaret Whitney of Greenville, sister in law, Judie and Timothy Belen of Westphalia and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Donald was preceded by his parents and his brothers, Harold and Richard . Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Friday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding with Pastor Ken Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greene Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Commission for the Blind, Spectrum Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
