Ionia Sentinel Standard, 6 Aug 1981

Ethel M. Whitten, 89, died at the home of Mrs. Harry Townsend, a niece, on
Nickleplate Road Wednesday afternoon.  She was born September 13, 1891, in
Fowler, the daughter of Walter and Julia Whitten.  She attended the Little Brick
School in Pewamo and then helped her parents on the family farm for many years.
 In 1928, she and a sister bought and began operating the Nickleplate general
store, retiring after 49 years, in 1977.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.  Three sisters preceded her in death.


Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. from Hull Memorial Chapel in Muir, the
Rev. Robert Larsen of North Plains Community Church officiating.  Burial will be
in Lyons Cemetery.
