Whitten, one of the leading members of the Ionia County Medical profession died in Blodgett Hospital, Grand Rapids, at 11:30 o’clock, Saturday morning, September 11. He had been ill of a valvular heart condition for more than a year and his illness became critical about a month ago. Dr. Whitten was born in Grattan township, Kent county, 63 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Manley Whitten. He attended the University of Valparaiso, Indiana, Ferris Institute, Big Rapids and graduated from the Detroit College of Medicine in 1912. In October of the same year, he came to Ionia to establish his practice. In June 1913 he was married to Miss Hilda Edmison of Harwood, Ontario, Canada. Mrs. Whitten, with their son Carlton of Los Angeles, Calif., and daughter, Mrs. John Tannheimer of Boston, Mass., and a brother, Leon Whitten of Grattan, are his survivors. Largely attended funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Adam J. Westmaas of Detroit, formerly of Ionia, officiated. He was assisted by Rev. George Rentschler, new pastor of the Ionia church. Honorary pall bearers were members of the Ionia-Montcalm Medical Society. Active pall bearers were Dr. John J. McCann, A. A. Rather, Dr. Perry C. Robinson, Clare L. Fuller, James Hilton and James Hood. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. A. A. Rather, Mrs. James Hilton, Mrs. P. C. Robertson and Mrs. George Coe, Jr. Burial was in Highland Park Mausoleum. Dr. Whitten was a member of the Presbyterian church, BPOE No. 548, and a life member of F. & AM, No. 36, Masons, past president of the Ionia Rotary club and Ionia Montcalm Medical Society and a member of the Ionia County club.
