The children of Julia invite all who knew her to participate in a celebration of her life on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Easton United Methodist Church, 4970 Potters Road, Ionia. Julia passed away Aug. 15, 2006. She was born Aug. 12, 1914 at her parents home on York Road. She was the fifth daughter of James Franklin and Florence Franks Cassel; the granddaughter of early pioneers to Sebewa, James and Catherine Cassel of Cassel Road and Andrew and Julia Ett Shannon Franks of Clarksville Road; descendant of three Revolutionary War heroes, Major General Asa Danforth, Michael Franks and Michael Franks II. In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death in 1970 by her husband of 35 years, L. Carlton Whorley; four sisters, Elta Hoffman, Jennie Fender Brundage, Emma Knisely, Alice Schlosser; and a brother, Joseph Cassel. Survivors include two sons, William C. and Thomas Whorley; a daughter, Alice Y. Whorley; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five nieces; five nephews; five first cousins; and special friend, Fred McCord. Julia lived on a farm all her life, learning young how to work hard. She attended Travis School through eighth grade and some years at Portland High. Later she was a housekeeper in Lansing, and retired after 27 years at General Tire. After retirement she raised her grandson, Mark Whorley and great-granddaughter, Maddi Whorley; kept a large garden, canned, baked, and mowed her own lawn until 90 years of age. She was an avid reader, kept up on the news, reading several newspapers and magazines daily; and always working the crossword puzzles. Particularly she liked mysteries, and collected Agatha Christie. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hunting & Fishing Club Scholarship Fund or the Hall Fowler Memorial Library Fund in care of Lake Funeral Home, 158 Mill St., Saranac, MI 48881. Julia was a determined, caring lady deserving of our taking time to reflect upon a life full of giving.
