July 26, 1915 HAY FORK ENTERS LEG: END, DEATH WILLIS WHORLEY, A WELL KNOWN EASTON RESIDENT VICTIM OF ACCIDENT. Accident Happened Last Wednesday Morning and Blood Poisoning Caused Death Two Days Later. Leaves Wife and Six Children. As a result of piercing his leg with a hayfork the middle of the week. Willis Whorley died this morning at four o’clock at his home next to the Easton- Dildine church of blood poisoning. Mr. Whorley was working in the barn Wednesday morning when the accident occurred that cost him his life. He lost considerable blood and the blood poisoning followed, rapidly sapping his strength. While unloading hay the big fork dropped when he pulled it with the trip rope and one tine cut a frightful gash in his thigh. He walked to the house where he collapsed. Mr. Whorley was a well-known resident of Easton and a brother-in-law of Eugene Vohlers. He leaves a widow and six children, Claude, Mrs. Gus Gott, Royce, Eugenia, Margery and William. Willis Whorley was born in Easton township, Ionia county, Michigan, June, 1964, and died July 23, 1915. He was married March 18, 1885 to Erin Vohlers, who survives him. To this union was born nine children of which six are still living, Claude, Irene, Royce, Eugenia Marjorie and Willis Jr. He leaves a father, Jacob Whorley, and three brothers, Henry of Sebewa, Oscar of Easton, and George of Lansing. He was one who made friends everywhere and he was greatly loved by his family owing to his unselfish disposition and thoughtfulness for others. He was born and lived on his farm nearly all his life. He leaves a host of friends to mourn him. WILLIS WHORLEY DEAD Succumbed To Blood Poisoning Following Accident the Day Before. A startling tragedy was reported Friday in the death of Willis Whorley of Easton at four o’clock that morning. He died in the same house where he was born fifty-one years ago. It was only a few hours before his death that the seriousness of his hurt was realized. He was injured Wednesday noon by a hay- fork which failed to act properly. The fork stuck on the load and when he attempted to pull it down with the rope it fell with a jerk instead of coming gradually. The tine just missed his head and gashed the right thigh, cutting to the bone, or possibly deeper. It was a long and jagged cut, but it was not supposed that the result could be fatal. He suffered a good deal of pain and subtle blood-poisoning finally set in and ended his life. Willis Whorley was a strong and hearty man, and his sudden and tragic death is a great shock to the community where he was such a potent factor in the social and progressive life. His widow, six children and several other relatives are left. The children are Claude Whorley and Mrs. G. Gott of this city, Royce, Eugene, Marjorie and Willis of Easton. His father, Jacob Whorley of Sebewa also survives, and there are three brothers, Henry Whorley of Sebewa Center and George and Oscar Whorley of Easton. David Vohlers of Decatur, Alabama, a brother of Mrs. Whorley, is expected here tomorrow morning. Chauncey Cole of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Locke of Grand Rapids will also be here for the funeral. The funeral announcement will be made tomorrow. ______________________________________ Rev.
