(CASSEL)(MRS. L. CARLTON): IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD, MI; September 7, 2006: "Obituaries - JULIA L. WHORLEY - The children of Julia L. Whorley invite all who knew her to participate in a celebration of her life on September 9, at 11 a.m., at the Easton United Methodist Church, 4970 Potters Road, Ionia. Julia was born Aug. 12, 1914, daughter of James Franklin and Florence (Franks) Cassel. In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death in 1970 by her husband of 35 years, L. Carlton Whorley, four sisters: Elta Hoffman, Jennie Fletcher Brundage, Emma Knisely, and Alice Schlosser, and one brother, Joseph Cassel. Survivors include two sons William C. and Karen Whorley, James T. and Judy Whorley, a daughter, Alice Y. Whorley, nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren, five nieces, five nephews, five first cousins and special friend, Fred McCord. Julia lived on a farm all her life learning how to work hard at an early age. She attended Travis School on Sunfield Road through the 8th grade and some years at Portland High School. After leaving home she was a housekeeper in Lansing before her marriage. In 1976 she retired after 27 years at General Tire. After retirement she raised grandson and one great-granddaughter, kept a large garden, canned, baked, crocheted, created crafts, made pine cone wreaths and mowed her own lawn until age 90. She was an avid reader, kept up on local and world news, reading several newspapers and magazines daily; always working the cross word puzzles. Particularly, she liked mysteries and collected Agatha Christie. Julia was a determined, caring lady deserving of our taking time to reflect upon a life full of giving.
