Wickwire, who established the Portland Observer in 1867 died Saturday, June 4, at the Soldiers home in Jackson. He was stricken with paralysis a year ago and never regained his health. He had been at the home for five weeks. Mr. Wickwire was born in Genesee county, New York, September 17, 1837, and came to Michigan when a boy. He learned the printer’s trade in the office of the Marshall Statesman, but when the war broke out and the president called for troops, laid down his stick and rule and enlisted for three months in the First Michigan infantry. At the expiration of this time he re-enlisted and served in the same regiment through the war. He was wounded at Malvern hill. Returning to Michigan, Mr. Wickwire founded and conducted the Ovid Register, the Portland Observer, the Dexter Leader, the Tekonsha Reporter, the Homer Index and the Lawton Tribune, directing them all for a time. In later years he worked at his trade on both the Jackson newspapers, retiring when the typesetting machines came into vogue. He leaves a widow and three sons George D. of Battle Creek, Edward W. of St. Louis and Robert S. Wickwire of Los Angeles, Cal.
