From Saranac Local. – Mrs. Daniel E. Wiers, of this village, died quite suddenly and unexpectedly last Sunday morning. We say unexpectedly, and so it was to many but those who were acquainted with her knew that she was subject to a disease of the heart that was liable to cause her death at any time. She was in the enjoyment of usual health however and on Saturday was attacked by the difficulty from which she has suffered for years and to which on Sunday morning she succumbed. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. T.G. Baxter preaching the sermon. Mrs. Powers Wiers was born April 15th, 1870, in Ionia Mich. She was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Powers, of Belding. Her home was in Ionia until a year previous to her marriage. When a girl she was an earnest, energetic, ambitious and intelligent girl. Her whole ambition centered on being a good reader and a teacher of German. That she attained her heights is well known. It was in her faithfulness as a teacher she ruined her health. In 1887 she obtained a position as teacher of German at St. Mary’s Convent at Milwaukee. She remained here several terms. The convent caught on fire and Anna was left in an up stairs room with twenty children. Putting each child one by one, out of a window and then by a ladder they made their escape but not so with Anna. She, under the awful strain, sank on the burning floor; she was rescued by the firemen but too late, her lungs were filled with smoke and heat and her health impaired for life. In 1889, Dec. 20th, at Ionia, by Rev. Geo. Lindsay, she was married to Mr. D.A. Wiers of this village; her married life has been an exceptionally happy one. Surrounded by every comfort of life, she gave her life in working for others.
