July 26, 1951 Walter Wies, 56, of Sunfield, passed away Sunday morning. He had been a rural mail carrier at Sunfield for 11 years. He had been seriously ill for over a month. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Patrick’s church here. Burial was in Portland cemetery. Mapes funeral Home at Sunfield was in charge of arrangements, and the Rosary was recited there Tuesday evening. Surviving are the wife, Clara; son, Lt. James Wies, stationed in California; daughter, Beverly Wies, a teacher at River Rouge. There are also four brothers and two sisters, who reside in the west. The deceased was born February 21, 1895 in Faulk county, South Dakota. On March 6, 1918 he entered the U. S. Army and served 16 months in the A. E. F. in France. On July 1, 1940 he was transferred to Sunfield as mail carrier from Tolstoy, So. Dakota. Out of town relatives here for the services were Glen Wies, a brother, and Mrs. Mary Knecht, a sister, of Eugene, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. David Adrian of Marion, South Dakota; Mrs. Phillip Emery of Concord, Calif.; and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Vitter, of Farmington. Bearers were Francis Lawless, Anthony Willems, Charles Campbell, Edward Thompson, Theo Lenon and Harold Hanna.
