Wilbur, mother of Postmaster J. G. Wilbur, of 213 E. Washington street, Belding, passed away Monday, December 10, in her ninety-first year, after nearly three years of patient suffering confined to her bed. Death was caused by her extreme old age. Hannah C. Burlingham was born in Sherburne, New York, July 30, 1838, one of eleven children. She was married in 1871 to Gideon Wilbur and moved to Hamilton, New York. To this union was born her one and only child, Jesse G. Wilbur, now postmaster of this city. The husband passed away in 1885 and in 1890 mother and son came to Michigan, locating first in Muskegon and later in 1892 coming to Belding where they have since remained. Something outstanding in the lives of this mother and son is, that they have never been separated in fifty-six years except for short periods when Mr. Wilbur, as a traveling salesman, was out on his route. When Mr. Wilbur was married he took his wife to his mother’s home and the two became very much attached to each other, and later the wife passing on, leaving two children of eight and nine years, Mrs. Wilbur, the grandmother, gave them the care of a mother. Four years ago Mr. Wilbur gave up his position on the road and took the office as Postmaster, that he might be with his mother each day in the remaining years of her life. Their devotion to each other was out of the ordinary. Mrs. Wilbur was a woman of sterling qualities, patient, self sacrificing and loved by all. Her passing was peaceful. She just dropped to sleep. Besides the son, she leaves a grandson, H. Burl Wilbur, of Traverse City, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Margaret Wilson, of Hartford, Connecticut; also a sister, Mrs. Kaet Tefft, of Sarlville, New York, the only surviving one of the eleven children. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock. Burial was in River Ridge cemetery beside the daughter-in-law, according to the wish she has so many times expressed in the last few years.
