Wilder died last Saturday morning, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Filkins of Otisco, having passed the four score mark in the voyage of life, being 80 years of age in January last. Mrs. Elvira H. Wilder was born in Heath, Mass., January 27, 1826 and died in Belding, Mich., May 5, 1906. She was the daughter of Horace and Anna Benton, who afterwards moved to Shelburn Falls, where she received her education. After finishing her course in the academy she taught school for fours years when she was married to Orrin Hewitt, in 1849. To this union was given one child, George T. Hewitt, now of Boone, Iowa. After the death of Mr. Hewitt she came west with her parents to Lee county, Ill., and in March 1855 was married to Alfred L. Wilder of Sublette, Ill. To this union was born four children, W. A. Wilder, Mrs. T. Frank Ireland, Arabella, who died at four years of age and R. A. Wilder of Osceola, Iowa. Her home was in Sublette, Ill. until coming to Belding in 1889. Four thirty-five years of her life she has been an invalid and since coming to Belding has been confined to her room a greater part of these years. Her husband until his death, devoted his time exclusively to caring for her and since then she has been tenderly cared for by other loving hands, until Saturday morning, when at four o’clock she quietly passed away at the age of eighty years. She became a Christian in early life, uniting with the Baptist church at the age of eleven years, of which denomination she was a consistent member until the time of her death, having united with the Belding Baptist church by letter when coming here. She was of a bright, happy nature, a kind neighbor, a loving mother and faithful wife. Until afflicted with diseases she took an active part in church and Sabbath school work, always counting for one wherever duty called. Although it was hard for her to give up this active life still she was resigned and cheerful during these last years, bowing in submission to the will of him who doeth all things well. The funeral service was held at the home of her son, W. A. Wilder, Monday afternoon, Rev. J. W. Sheehan officiated. Many friends of the deceased and the family were present. Amid many beautiful flowers and floral offerings the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in the family lot in Riverside cemetery.
