Wilder, many years a supervisor from Belding, and for four years— January 1907 to January 1911—register of deeds for Ionia county, died at his home in Belding early Wed. morning. He had arisen for the day, and went into the kitchen and built the fire. He immediately suffered an attack of heart distress, to which he was somewhat subject, and expired almost immediately. William A. Wilder was born at Sublette, Illinois, January 8, 1856, and received his education in the schools of that city, and after graduating from the High school, spent one year in attendance upon the Illinois State Normal School. Returning to his home, he entered the store of his father, and upon attaining his majority, was admitted as a partner in the firm, they conducting a general mercantile business for the next twelve years. In 1899 he came to Michigan, locating at Belding, where for five years he was secretary-treasurer of the Miller Casket Company, after which he opened a book and confectionery store, which he conducted until January 1, 1907. Mr. Wilder served the city of Belding for twelve years as Supervisor from the Third ward, and was twice elected chairman of the Board of Supervisors. He also served that city for several years as City Auditor, his work in both positions always being performed in a manner which gave entitre satisfaction to the people of that city. In the fall of 1906 he received the Republican nomination for Register of Deeds, being elected at the November election with a majority which gave evidence of the popularity which he had attained with the voters of the county. January 1, 1907 he assumed the duties of Register of Deeds, and was reelected for a second term. Mr. Wilder was married July 31, 1879 to Miss Jessie A. Dexter, of Sublette, Ill. Mrs. Wilder, who is the beloved president of the Ionia County W.C.T.U., survives.
