Wilkes, 78, former Muir resident, died Tuesday, at Carson City Hospital. He was born Sept. 11, 1906, at Podunk, Mich., Kent County, the son of Ambrose and Bertha Wilkes. He was married to Donelda Lindley. She died in 1984. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army cavalry and a retired maintenance foreman for the Grand Truck Railroad. He lived in the Pewamo-Muir area for 27 years, moving to Carson City in 1983. Surviving are five sons: Cpt. James Porterfield at Aberdeen, S. Dak., James Knickerbocker of Belding, Jack Knickerbocker of Oregon, Lee Wilkes in Germany, John Wilkes of Mackinac Island; seven daughters, Rose Ritter of St. Johns, Joan Fly of Homestead, Fla., Grace Glenn of Orleans, Roberta Ross of Santa Marie, Calif., Judy Luna of Carson City, Janet McCandless of Carson City, and Gloria Stevens of Maple Rapids; 34 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. from the Hull Memorial Chapel with Lt. Mark Martsolf of Salvation Army, Alma, officiating.
