Community Sorrows as Emory Wilkins Is Laid to Rest.

“To bring some word of comfort and a sentiment of cheer in this, your great hour
of sorrow, is the ambition of the entire community,” Rev. M.S. Decker told a
large group of relatives and friends who attended the funeral of Emory Wilkins
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Wilkins, South Ionia, Thursday afternoon at 2
o’clock.

“I believe,” said Rev. Decker, “that parents have held their children just a
little dearer since the tragedy came into your home.  If this great load of
grief can be lightened by human sympathy, then it must be lightened as the
entire community is sorrowing for you.  There is a secret chamber in our hearts
where none but ourselves and God can enter.  We need to reach up and place our
hand in that of our Heavenly Father and ask for His guidance in such an hour as
this.”

The music was furnished by Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. Ray Colwell with Miss
Lillian Ashdown at the piano.

As the casket was carried from the house the children of the Loomis school
formed an honorary guard, and each child laid a spray of flowers on the casket.
 L. Dean McVeigh, Leo Blow, Devine Anderson, Howard Sprague, Willard Simmons,
and Clifford Cook, all schoolmates, acted as bearers.  Burial took place at
Highland Park.

Emory had been anxiously waiting for June 6, for on that day he would have
received his eighth grade diploma.  He was buried in the blouse which he had
purchased and the suit which he had selected for his graduation.
