June 21, 1999 Richard S. “Dick” Willemin, 66, passed away Friday, June 18, 1999, suddenly and unexpectedly at home. Dick was born May 6, 1933, in Lansing, the son of Ralph and Mary (Hunt) Willemin. He was an honorably discharged member of the U. S. Air Force and a member of Portland V.F.W. Post #4090. Dick owned and operated Dick’s Standard Service (now Portland Amoco) for 35 years, beginning his business in 1960. He was always available to give friendly advice and wisdom on any subject to all who came. Dick was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Portland, where he served on the school board and the athletic association. He began the girls varsity softball team at St. Patrick’s high School in 1974, coaching through the 1983 season. His team won the 1981 Class D State Championship. Dick also coached Little League and Pony League baseball for many years. Aside from being with his family, he enjoyed coin collecting, travel and pinochle games, but his greatest passion was fishing. Dick will be greatly missed by his many fishing buddies, who now will have to find the good bass holes on their own. God needed another fisherman in heaven and now he has the best. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Marilyn Stump. Surviving are his wife, Ellen, with whom he celebrated 43 years of marriage on June 16; three sons, Ralph (Mary) of Portland, Steven (LuAnn) of Grand Ledge, and Thomas (Sherri) of Puyallup, Wash.; one daughter, Nancy of Lansing; six grandchildren, Brock, Jessica, Brittany and Cody Willemin, and Sara and Erin Fedewa; one brother, William (Elaine) of Crystal Lake; one sister Janice (James) Trierweiler of Portland, brother-in-law, Pliney Stump of Pewamo, many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles D. Hall, pastor, 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Church and Rite of Committal following at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 1301 E. Grand River, Ave., today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fr. Flohe Foundation, C/O St. Patrick’s, 140 Church St., Portland, Mich. 48875, or to the St. Patrick’s Athletic Association in memory of Dick Willemin.
