Willems, 82, of Portland died Feb. 28, 2000. He was born in Portland, Oct. 3, 1917, the son of Anthony and Katherine (Spitzley) Willems. Mr. Willems retired from the Armour Meat Packing Company where he invented and patented various livestock handling equipment. He was an Ionia County Commissioner for 12 years and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Portland and the Portland Knights of Columbus Council #2158. Mr. Willems was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Major in the United States Army, and commander of the Pack Mule Brigade in Africa and Italy, where he received the Bronze Star for his service. He was a member and Past Commander of the Portland VFW Post #4090. Surviving are children, Donald Jr. (Mary) of Grand Ledge, John (Heidi) of Lansing, James (Karen) of DeWitt, and Mary (Timothy) Grant of Chicago; nine grandchildren; three sisters; one brother; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean P. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 3 at St. Patrick Church, with the Rev. Charles D. Hall officiating. Rite of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery. Military graveside honors were provided by the Portland VFW Post #4090.
