Willett was held last Thursday, December 17 at the Methodist Episcopal Church, with the Rev. M.W. Duffey, of Ionia, a former pastor of Mr. Willet, giving the eulogy. He spoke of the high qualities of Mr. Willet by which he had won a large circle of friends in the church circles at Alma where he had become acquainted with Mr. Willet, who was a trusted official of the church and an usher which a pastor liked to have. Mr. Willet’s health failed in Alma where he was engaged in the grocery and meat business and they came to Carson City, eight years ago and in Hubbardston three years ago, when Mr. Willet took charge of the local telephone exchange. During the nine years of invalidism he has been a constant care and was loved of the children who came to know him as they passed his place of residence. During the recent weeks his health failed rapidly and the end came on December 14, after a life of 65 years, six months and six days. He was born June 8, 1871, in Ionia county south of Ionia, and when four years of age, moved with his parents to Fair Plains, near Greenville where he continued to live until after his marriage to Miss Clara Lee on March 25, 1897. Previous to his marriage he had completed a commercial course at Ferris Institute, Big Rapids. His father’s poor health brought him back to the farm where he was married and after five years, he lived for four years on a farm near Middleton before entering the business world, buying a general store at Butternut. Four years later he sold out, and went to Marion for a year, and then to Alma, where he spent the greater portion of his business life. He entered into the activities of the communities in which he lived and served not only in the church but as township treasurer and member of the school board. He is survived by his widow, one son, Dr. Harry Richard Willet, of Marion, one daughter, Mrs. Harold Shaw and one grandson, Robert Harry Shaw of Fenwick, one half sister, Mrs. Clara Carter of Sheridan, and one half brother, George Pearson of Fenwick. The burial was in the Fair Plains cemetery near Greenville, and Rev. John W. Broxholm of the Methodist Church had charge of the service there and also assisted at the local service.
