Albert Williams of this city. Mrs. Williams was born in the town of West Monroe, Oswego county, N.Y., Oct. 16th, 1822. Her father, Capt. James Patterson, was one of the early settlers of West Monroe, and one of the best and most prominent inhabitants, and died there in the summer of 1836. Mrs. Wealthy Patterson, her mother, was very well and favorably known to many of the people of this place and Otisco, and died at Grand Rapids, in the house of her son, Lucius Patterson, Esq., some 14 years since, and her brother, Lucius, dying there about 3 years since. Mrs. Williams was married to Mr. Williams at West Monroe January 6, 1844, and in the next April they removed to Monroe, Mich., where they lived till April, 1845, then removing to Otisco, and remaining there till May, 1851, when they went to Grand Rapids, living there till May, 1852, in which month they came to this place, where their residence has ever since been. Of this marriage four children were born, two of whom died in the early hours of infancy, and Miss Fannie, March 31, 1873, she then lacking only one month and thirteen days of being twenty-one years of age. Mrs. Ellen W. Babcock, wife of Burton Babcock, living three miles west of this city, is the only surviving child of Mr. and Mrs. Williams, and with her two young daughters and her husband are the only relatives Mr. Williams has left to him in this part of the state. Mrs. Williams became an earnest professor of religion and a temperance worker at an early period of her life, and so continued to the day of her death. She united with the Presbyterian church of this place some 23 years ago, and then by letter with the Congregational church here at the time of its organization, May 9, 1868, and remained a member of it the remainder of her life. The Patterson family without exception was distinguished for more than ordinary native, and some of them, acquired talents, Lucius Patterson becoming, as is well known here, one of the leading lawyers in this part of the state. In the death of Mrs. Williams society loses one of its most popular leaders. She possessed qualities of head and heart of an unusually agreeable and attractive nature, which made her a general favorite and placed her as the principal worker and organizer in all enterprises of a public character which the ladies of the city have undertaken. She was at one time president of the Library Association, and has held various other positions of social distinction and honor. The community possessed no truer, better or worthier woman.
